The Northern Coast of Donegal, Malin Head and Inishtrahull island, Malin Head is the most Northerly point on Ireland
The Northern Coast of Donegal, looking East from Malin Head, the most Northerly point of the island of Ireland. The small, rocky island of Inishtrahull seen in this image has the oldest rocks of Ireland place in Ireland, but in one sense it’s not really part of Ireland at all! The rocks there have been dated as 1,778,000,000 (or billion) years old. And they show every trace of their great age - they are gnarled, faulted and heavily folded and were originally part of Greenland and then part of Islay. Over their long existence they have been altered by geological events and the minerals they contain have separated out to form colourful bands. Geologists call this a type of rock gneiss, which is also found in North west Scotland and parts of the outer hebrides.
