We found among the boarders at the Hotel Colona group of young Peruvian and Chilean mining engi-neers who were very congenial. They made the bestof their voluntary exile, and although none of themenjoyed the fearful climatic conditions, they man-aged to make their surroundings quite tolerable withhard work, cheerful conversation, birthday dinners,and social calls. The courtyard of the hotel was a fine example ofthe prevailing mixture of old and new. The roof wascovered with beautiful large red tiles whose weighthad crushed down the rafter
