Mars Somerset Space Walk Taunton Bridgwater canal
Mars, on the Bridgwater and Taunton canal. Somerset Space walk designed by astronomer Heather Couper. The canal is 13 miles long and the Somerset space walk takes this distance to represent the diametre of the solar system. At either end of the canal a scale model of Pluto (smaller than a pea) marks the outerlimits of our solar system. The other planets are spaced along the length of the canal with a model of the Sun, around 5ft in diameter, placed at Maunsel lock, the halfway point on the canal. The vastness of space and the challenges facing future space travellers is made easier to understand on a human level when, reducing the Earth to a ball less than an inch in diameter, and with the moon just a few inches away, it takes twenty minutes walking at a decent pace to reach Mars.
