Giganotosaurus carolinii thigh bone. Rodolfo Coria (left) and Leonardo Salgado hold the fossil thigh bone of the biggest carnivorous dinosaur unearthed to date. Bigger even than Tyrannosaurus rex, Giganotosaurus may have been the largest meat- eater to walk the Earth. The 110-million-year-old fossil was dug up by the palaeontologists in 1993 at El Chocon, Argentina, along with a jaw-bone found nearby by Coria and colleague Jose Bonaparte. Both bones proved longer than matching bones in the biggest T. rex. The new species is thought to belong to the same general lineage as Tyrannosaurus. Photographed in 1995.
