Wemade fast to a large, flat ice-floe on whichthe trained eyes of the Captain recognizedthe signs of a fresh-water pond. A sailor,after first tasting the water to see that itwas not brackish, chopped a hole in the iceformed on the surface of the pond, throughwhich a beautiful blue was reflected; thenozzle of a hose attached to a pump wasthen inserted in the aperture and the waterpumped into a cask on deck.
