Sodus Point Mural, Wayne County, New York State


This mural and plaque provides historical background for th large outdoor mural on the exterior of the Sodus Point Firehouse commemorates the role of a schooner captained by George Garluck named `Free Trader` to pick up escaping slaves fleeing to Canada. He would stop to pick them up from the waters of Lake Ontario where they had rowed to escape in small rowboats and carry them to freedom in Canada. The mural, by Luis Zarate, also shows images of Harriet Tubman famed for her role in organizing the African American Underground Railroad and leading abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
