NPP satellite launch tracing an arc of light in the pre-dawn sky. The NPP (NPOESS Preparatory Project) is an earth observation satellite designed to bridge the gap between the current EOS (Earth Observing System) and the future JPSS (Joint Polar Satellite System) scheduled for 2016. It will provide critical data to help scientists understand long-term climate patterns and improve short-term weather forecasts. The JPSS resulted from the restructuring of the NPOESS. The NPP carries five instruments. It was launched at 05:48 EDT on 28 October 2011 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, USA, on a Delta II rocket.
