The establishment of a through water and rail connection be-tween these cities was made possible by the completion in 1845 ^^a railroad from Fall River to Boston. It was opened for travelJune 9, 1845. Colonel Borden and his brother, who had estab-lished steamboat service between Fall River and New York earlythat year with a small craft named the Eudora, were stockholdersand directors in the new railroad. The terminus of the railroad was at South Braintree, whereconnection was made with the Old Colony Railroad to is recorded that the number of passengers carried the tirst yearwas 59,382 and that the net earnings were $10,335. ^^^^ ^*^^^^cost of building the railroad was $829, The Bay State Steamboat Company was the corporate title ofthe company which established the steamboat service betweenFall River and New York. It was organized in 1846 with a cap-ital stock of $300,000. The fleet of the new line consisted of twosteamboats, the Bay State and Massachusetts.
