As the annual Carnival celebrations get underway in Venice, high water (acqua alta) floods many parts of the city. Many tourists have been caught out by the high water and had to buy reinforced plastic boots in bright colours - which are worn over normal shoes - to keep dry. Better weather is forecast for the carnival celebrations in St Mark's Square this weekend.
