Old Town House clock designed by William Adam in Dundee, UK

An historic clock featuring a model of Dundee's old Town House has been restored to former glory - after being pulled from a skip five years ago. The clock had featured high up on a building in the city's High Street but had vanished during a refurbishment. It has now been put back as a reminder of the day when the Old Town House itself disappeared from Dundee virtually overnight. The clock now overlooks the site of the old town house. Designed by the famous William Adam, Dundee's old Town House, known as "The Pillars", stood in the city centre for 200 years. But in the early 1930s the city fathers, having carried out a series of works around the city square, decided that the Town House should go - but without really consulting anyone. "Although at that time the Adam Building was listed, perhaps Dundee council didn't like this 18th Century, rather grubby building in the middle of their brand new city square. "Almost overnight, we understand, the bulldozers appeared and the Adam Town House disappeared over a weekend." The move angered many, not least the Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee, who used to meet there. A clock featuring a model of the building was soon in place in the High Street. It vanished five years ago but, thanks to the Nine Trades, was rescued from a skip and refurbished. Even after all this time, Nine Trades will not forgive the council for pulling down The Pillars. The building was absolutely magnificent and really should have been kept in some form or another as an asset." The Nine Trades' next move is to restore the chimes to the city's Auld Steeple.
