Tetrahymena protozoa. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of two Tetrahymena thermophila protozoa (single-celled animals). Nuclei are green, cell walls red and cilia (hairs) blue. T. thermophila is a ciliate, having numerous fine cilia on its cell wall. It has a large macronucleus and several small micronuclei. Protozoa such as this are being used in biotechnology research at Axiva (part of Aventis) in Frankfurt, Germany. They are being studied to see if they can be used to make useful biologically active chemicals such as enzymes, polyunsaturated fatty acids and antibiotics. Magnification unknown.
