An expanse of the Shanklin beaches is pictured of the traditional seaside resort facing SE on the Isle of Wight. The beach merges into Sandown travelling NE and then Culver Down. Shanklin Chine meets the sea near the southern end. Hope Beach, Small Hope Beach and Shanklin beaches merge with Sandown Beach, an expanse of several km for walkers. There is a lift to carry people from the beach to the town above. The waterfalls of Shanklin Chine have attracted artists including Turner and Daniell in their sketchbooks of English scenes. This part of the Isle of Wight hosted one end of the Pluto pipeline that supplied fuel to the D-Day beaches
