The Indian Club exercise, as practiced at the present day in the diflferentGymnasiums and institutions of physical training throughout the country, isproperly di^dded into two distinct kinds: one with the short and light Club,or Bat, and the other with the long Club, or Indian Club proper. The authordoes not deem it necessary to introduce the exercises for the light Club inthis work, as they are only adapted for invalids and children. To those whoneed them we would refer to a work on Light Gymnastics, by Dr. Dio Lewis,of Boston, Mass. It will therefore be understood, that the exercises in this work areexclusively for the long Clubs. They are used in pairs, and vary in lengthfrom twenty-four to twenty-eight inches, and in weight, commonly, from fourto twenty pounds each, or from eight to forty pounds to the pair.
