As long as the bodies remain in the cervical canalthe mucous membrane covering them possesses a singlelayer of columnar epithelium, but when the polypus pro-jects into the vagina the mucous membrane of the pro-truding portion loses its glands, or they become merecrypts, and the epithelium stratifies. When the adenomatous surface is extensive andthe follicles are numerous, the white dots on a pink groundproduce a characteristic appearance. In very rare cases a group of follicles will hang as agrape-like mass in the vagina. These may be called race-mose adenomata. DISEASES OF THE UTERUS. IJJ Causes.—Nothing is known concerning the cause of thisaffection. It occurs in virgins and in mothers; extensiveadenomatous patches are often associated with lacerationsof the cervix, and the disease is more common in womenwho have had children than in nulliparae.
