View of the tunnel of the HERA collider at DESY, the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg. HERA (Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator) is a new type of accelerator which will collide 820 GeV protons (members of the hadron family of particles) with 30 GeV electrons. HERA is due to start operations in 1989-1990. The picture shows the beam pipe for electrons, which is encased in pink bending magnets & red focusing magnets. The proton beam pipe & magnet ring will be built on top of the electron ring. The electron & proton beams will intersect at 4 points around the km long tunnel, where massive detectors will record the particle interactions. Photo taken Dec. 1987.
