In the earlier years of its history the Santa Fe trade, which beganabout 1838, amounted to from $50,000 to $100,000 in merchandiseconveyed each year across the plains to Mexico. Outward boundcaravan trains consisting of two or three wagons each were loadedwith whiskey, provisions (including fancy groceries), cotton, do-mestics, prints, notions and Indian goods.
