This photo, dating to about 1861, shows a powder monkey on a deep sea craft In the navy, which at this time was during the Civil War in the United States—before the days of fixed ammunition when the powder was brought up in canvas bags or powder buckets. During a battle, these brave young boys were constantly on the run from their divisions to the magazine. Under the break of the poop deck (behind the boy pictured here) are the cutlasses that every sailor wore at the time.
