MATERIALS AND METHODS Speci-nens of Gcukcnsia dcinissa dcinissa, 7 to 9 cm long, were collected from salt marsres in Oyster Creek, Maine; Oyster 15ay. Long Island, New York: Sippewiset, Marsh on Cape Cod. Massachusetts; Sapelo Island, Georgia; and Duval and 'aim Beach Counties in Florida. Specimens of G. d. granossinia, 6 to 8 cm li ig, were collected in Florida from Duval, Yolusia, Franklin and Sarasota count!" The soft parts were removed and the shells retained for sectioning. Three kinds of 'nervations were made. To examine the growth surface, the shells were cut panu to the ribs, rinsed in distilled water, then bleached in ', sodium hypochlorite lorox) for to 2 hours to loosen the periostracum. The periostracum was ;en gently removed with forceps. To examine the shell.
