Adequately to supply thestrange deficiency in our literature indicated by thisfact is a task that will require powers far greater thanmine. Some day, perhaps, the story of the Gothswill be told in English by a writer possessing the rarecombination of literary skill and profound scholarshipthat will be needed to do it justice. But in the mean-time I would fain hope that this brief sketch may befound to have a sufficient reason for its existence. Ihave made no attempt to write a brilliant narrative,well knowing that success in such an attempt isbeyond my reach.
