The Earl of Jerseys Committee, which is con-sidering the question of alleged preferential rail-way rates given to foreign and colonial produce,continue to take evidence, and among the latestwitnesses was the general manager of the GreatNorthern Railway Company, Mr. Bury, who, inthe course of his evidence, stated that the GreatNorthern, the Midland, and the North-WesternRailway Companies, in consequence of the diffi-culties which were found by the traders in under-standing the authorised scale of the grain rates,had made 3s. 3d. per ton the basis figure, and ton per mile for each distance from eighteenmiles up to 141 miles, and beyond that distanceId. for every two miles. This was less than theauthorised rates. It was a general rule amongthe railway companies that the shortest routegoverned the rate.
