Where there is a choice of situations, heavy and wet soils should be avoided, and preference given to the light and <iry For an early crop sow as soon as the o-round is in good w^^i^i^ig condition; plant- fngs for general crop may be made as late as JiTne, but early sowings succeed best. The ^ j^;^:: early, small-sized varieties may be sown in drills ten inches apart, but the larger sorts require at least eighteen inches between the tows; cover three-quarters of an inch deep, and when the plants are well up, thin to six inches apart in the rows. As an agricultural root, the carrot is unsurpassed for feeding GUERANDE, CARROT. Earliest French Forcing. A small round root; the earliest vari- ety and good for forcing under glass Early Scarlet Horn. A medium-sized root, half-long, of fine color, and much used for cooking; grown for eaily use, and to sell in bunches ........... Querande. Intermediate in length; fully three to five inches in diameter; fine quality Danvers Half=Long.
