Human-powered aircraft research. Student carrying out laboratory testing of the Southampton University Human-Powered Aircraft (SUHPA) in Southampton, UK. This design project uses modern materials and was inspired by the first human-powered flight (SUMPAC) by a team from the same university 50 years earlier on 9 November 1961. This 2011 design, by engineering students, uses carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and an autopilot to enable the cyclist-pilot to concentrate on powering the propeller. Competition flights between HPA designs have been proposed for the London 2012 Olympics.
