The Germans then passed to the offensive,but our troops, having repulsed the enemy from thepositions in which they had rallied themselves, resumedthe attack after two days. This new offensive hascontinued to progress, but slowly. The war in thisregion has become a regular siege. Every positionwhich is occupied is immediately entrenched by one sideor the other, and it is this fact which explains the delayin our advance ; nevertheless local successes are beingdaily obtained. 2. In the region of Nancy and the Woevre.—Since the. THE TURN OF THE TIDE 217 beginning of the campaign this region, comprised betweenthe fortress of Metz on the German side and the fortressesof Toul and Verdun on the French side, has not been thetheatre of any important operation. 3. The Meuse betiveen Verdun and MSzieres.—It willbe remembered that the French Forces originally took theoffensive in the direction of Longwy, Neufchateau, andGivet. The troops operating in the region of Spincourtand Longuyon have inflicted a check upon the CrownPrinces army. In the regions of Neufchateau andGivet, OR the contrary, certain of our troops havesuffered partial defeat, which has compelled them to fallback on the Meuse without, however, dislocating theirmain body. This retreat compelled the Forces operating inthe neighbourhood of Spincourt also to withdrawtowards the Meuse.
