Spongy and bulbous stalks (Inflated petiole) of dried Common Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) after water evaporation

This is one of the fastest growing plants known. This pond was completely covered by it. After the water evaporated tons of the dried plant remained. The spongy and bulbous stalks (inflated petioles) allow the plant to float.
