Arthur Henry Rostron (1869-1940), captain of the Carpathia, with his wife Ethel. Rostron captained RMS Carpathia when it rescued some 710 survivors of the sinking of RMS Titanic. Titanic struck an iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912 in the North Atlantic during its maiden voyage, and sank with the loss of 1517 lives. This photograph, from the Bain News Service, dates from 25 February 1913. Rostron and his wife were in the USA to attend a ceremony in the White House on 1 March 1913, where Rostron received a Congressional Gold Medal from US President Taft. Later the same day, Rostron was awarded the American Cross of Honor.
