Sir Thomas Elyot, in his Bibliotheca, about 1550, says thatbeing with his father, Sir Richard Elyot, at Ivy-Church, hebeheld the bones of a dead man found deep in the groundwhere they digged stone, which being joined together was inlength 13 ft. 10 in., whereof one of the teeth my father had, whichwas of the quantity of a great walnut. Perhaps this may inpart be explained by what happened here ten or twelve years Radnors keeper, in digging out a fox in a British encamp-ment called the Lynckets, about a mile from this, found theskeleton of a Saxon chief with the brass boss of his shield withsilver studs on his breast, and the remains of sword, spear, andknife; and he was deemed to be a giant of a man, as theymeasured his arms against the keepers, who was 6 ft. high, andfound them 2 or 3 in. longer. But it turned out they measured hislegs instead of his arms, and he was really of very ordinary stature. About fifty or sixty years ago the buildings at Ivy-Church we re. Ivy-Churchy co. Wilts. 27 converted into a school, kept by Mr. Sopp. Professor Fawcettwas educated there with sons of the neighbouring gentry. Thebuildings having become much dilapidated in iSSS, the late LordRadnor determined to pull them down—a decision greatly to bedeplored. There were found considerable remains on the south, and the refectory on the north. The monks cells probablyoriginally connected the two, forming three sides of a quadrangle.
