Coursed Rubble.—In walls of this sort, someeffort is made to produce a coursed effect, using- stone ofrandom sizes; little or no attention, however, is paid touniformity of height in the different courses. For suchwalls, the stones are generally roughly dressed by the masonbefore he begins work. Care should be taken to get asnearly parallel beds as possible, and to bring the face ofeach stone to a fairly even surface at right angles to thebeds. The quoins, or corner stones, in coursed rubble are. Fig. 22. usually dressed and laid with more care than the remainderof the work, and also serve as gauge courses. Coursedrubble, when well built, makes a very solid wall, and ismuch used. All ashlar shouldhave straight and horizontal bed joints, and the verticaljoints should be kept plumb. Failure to do this mars theeffect of the work very materially. 55. Coursed ashlar is a class of stonework in which thepieces are uniform in size and the bed joints are
