Male ice climber on Champney Falls in the White Mountain National Forest, NH

Dan Hawes of Hanson, Massachusetts, climbs the frozen Champney Falls in the White Mountain National Forest. He uses 12 pointed crampons mounted on insulated plastic mountaineering boots, and an ice axe in each hand to aid her ascent of the waterfall. A rope attached to his climbing harness runs to an anchor at the top of the route, then down to his climbing partner and wife Jen Hawes (not shown), who guarantees that he is "on belay: in case of a slip or fall.
