The rider will first use thesnaffle-reins, which he will hold together inthe left hand, as he would the will rest the outer edge of the righthand (see Plate XI.) upon the reins in frontof the left hand, in order to increase thepower of the right hand; after which he willgradually bear on the snaffle-bit. As soonas the horse yields, it would suffice to raisethe right hand, in order to diminish thetension of the reins, and reward the ani-mal. As the hand must only present a forceproportioned to the resistance of the neck,it will only be necessary to hold the legsrather close to prevent backing.
