This is the ancient application of theterm. To the earUest settlers the Indians to the south-west were known as the Appalachians, and from themthe mountains gained their name. While today theterm is made to cover the whole system of the easternhighlands, in a distinctive sense it applies only to theSouthern mountains. Appalachia is set off by its heights,its climate, its products, and its people, from the landssurrounding it. It may perhaps be allowed to extendas far as the Alleghanies take it into Pennsylvania,but it has no kinship with the Catskills, the Adiron-dacks, the Green or the White Mountains, much lesswith the plains.
