The cleans-ing process occupies about three min-utes, and is practiced every day whenthe river is especially foul. At othertimes the filter may run several dayswithout washing. The waste water af-ter washing the sand escapes into theriver through two eight-inch pipes fur-nished with check valves. After roughfiltration the water under treatmentflows through an eight-inch pipe intoanother chamber, in which its height isautomatically regulated by a butterfly-valve and float. A twelve-inch pipe leads from a cribsunk in the river to a raw-water basinholding fifteen to twenty thousand gal-lons. From this the water passes intoa rectangular tank of reinforced con-crete, some 12 feet by 15 feet, where itpasses through three feet of coarsesand to strain out the suspended mat-ter. This sand is brought from Bir-mingham, , 31 tons being requiredfor the Lindsay plant. The pre-filter is air-tight box built of concrete, whichis directly connected, by means of atwo-inch pipe, with the ozonizers, in asmall building adjoining. The waternow falls down a number of four-inchpipes leading to the bottom of a well, thirty feet deep, and in doing so passesthe ends of a great many small brasstubes, through which, by suction, theozonized air is drawn and thoroughlymixed with the water.
