Polarised light micrograph of Dinobryon sp. and green algae. Dinobryon is a type of microscopic algae that can obtain energy and carbon through photosynthesis and phagotrophy of bacteria. They can be found as individual cells or in branching colonies and are commonly found in freshwater habitats. Green algae perform photosynthesis, contribute to oxygen production and carbon dioxide removal and supporting life. There are about 22,000 species of green algae, many of which live most of their lives as single cells. Magnification: 186x when printed 10 centimetres wide.
