Switzerland. Lake Geneva & Chillon Geneva is beautiful but Chillon Castle is what captures the eye. It was built In the ninth century. Originally to protect the road to the Great St Bernard pass to Italy, the present castle was built by the counts of Savoy in the late twelfth century. Used as a state prison during the sixteenth century,and was the setting of the English poet Byron's "The Prisoner of Chillon".
