This would costabout 20 cents per million gallons foreach 1 carbonic acid. Soda-ashhas been used successfully on a smallscale to obviate red water trouble. Thegreat difference in cost Is due to greatermolecular weight, less combining power, and greater cost per pound. The costmust be considered in connection withthe degree and advantage of the changeof sulphates to carbonates, etc. Aeration of water by splashing followedby neutralization of residual free carbonicacid (about 5 ) is probably the ROOTS removed from of this character indi-cate clearly the necessity ofcleaning old sewers. Troubles likethis can be largely eliminated by care-ful construction of joints. October, ]91i Street Cleaning Department of Baltimore, Md. By STUART STEVENS SCOTT, Balrimore, Md.
