Art . FORESHORTENING Am) CONVERGENCE 251 1. Estimate the proportions of tlie back of tlie book and draw the l)ack very lightly. 2. Take pencil measurements, comparing the thickness with the length of the back and correct, if necessary, the light sketch already made. 3. Judge the position of the l)ack edge of the top in relation to its near edge and lightly place it. 4. By pencil measurement test the accuracy of this judgment, measuring the thickness of the book and comparing this dimension with the apparentwidth of the foreshortened top. 5. Correct, if necessary, the placing of the back

By pencil measurement test the accuracy of this judgment, measuring the thickness of the book and comparing this dimension with the apparentwidth of the foreshortened top. 5. Correct, if necessary, the placing of the back To help in the Judgment of the convergence of the two sides and of theapparent length of the back edge of the book, hold two pencils verticallyat arms length, one at each end of the book and at right angles to thefront edge, so that it appears to touch the end of the near edge of the topsurface. Keeping the pencils perfectly vertical, close one eye and studythe apparent slant of the receding edges when compared with thevertical lines of the pencils. Study also the angle at each end made bythe vertical pencil and the receding edge. Draw the receding edgeswith very light lines. Hold the drawing at arms length and compare it with the model. If itdoes not agree with the model in appearance, take more careful pencilmeasurements and tests and correct where necessary. Go over the drawing carefully, finishing it in accented outline, and add atable line. 253 AET The study and drawing of the cubical model at an angle of forty-five degrees. 1.
