Proboscis mother and baby, Tanjung Puting NP, Indonesia
The threatened proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) lives high in the tree tops along the Sekonyer River, Tanjung Puting National Park, Indonesia. The nose of a proboscis monkey displays that monkey’s status, and the nose can get as large as 7 inches. The males have larger noses than females and the older males have larger noses than the young males. The also act as resonating chambers to amplify warning calls and attract females. This threatened species only live on Borneo Island.
