In 1769 the House of Burgesses passed anact To make provisions for the support, and maintenance ofidiots, lunatics and other persons of unsound mind. 3 This actappointed trustees, and made provision for the building and main-tenance of the hospital, as well as rules for the admission ofpatients. A building was accordingly built, and the first patientsadmitted in October, 1773.
