Ketamine drug, molecular model. Ketamine is a drug used in human and veterinary medicine, mostly for the induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia. Ketamine is also abused as a recreational drug that can produce a wide range of effects. Sale for non-medicinal use is illegal in many countries. It was originally developed in 1965, and approved for use in 1970. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (dark blue), oxygen (red) and chlorine (blue-green).
