During the period from 1892 to1899 he was first secretary-, afterwards vicepresident and eventually president of TheJackson & Woodin Manufacturing Company,at Berwick, his achievements in the capacity ofchief executive being sufficiently notable todraw the notice of the New York bankers andpave the way for the recognition which hassince come. In 1899 he was an active factorin the formation of the American Car andFoundry Company, which consolidated seven-teen car building companies, including TheJackson & Woodin Company, and became itsvice president and a member of the executivecommittee. In June, 1901, he succeeded to thepresidency and has since continuously occupiedthat office, as well as the chairmanship of theexecutive committee.
