Forest dieback in the Sauerland. Whole spruce forests near Luedenscheid in the Sauerland region have been damaged by the bark beetle and died. The infested trees must be cut down quickly so that the beetle cannot spread further to infest other weakened trees. The great drought in the forests also causes the trees to die. © Frank Schultze / Zeitenspiegel
