An old 1700s engraving of Whitby, North Yorkshire looking towards the sea, showing the old hand operated wooden drawbridge that men could raise & lower to allow vessels out to sea or into the harbour. It was preceded by a small stone packhorse bridge which once crossed the then shallower harbour, leading to the abbey. It had an associated bridge chapel (west side). Part of the old pack horse bridge was uncovered circa 1980's when work was undertaken (under the road at the bottom of Golden Lion Bank . It was back-filled).
