Itappears that the total railway mileage in the UnitedStates on that date was miles, there beingan increase of miles, or Dt during the year. Excepting yard track and sidings of which therewere miles, about 32 per cent of which arrlaid with iron rails, substantially 95 per cent of therailway tracks in the country are laid with steelrails. The total number of locomotives in service onJune 30, 1897, was 35,986, the increase in number ascompared with the preceding year being 36. Of thetotal number of locomotives reported. wereclassed as passenger locomotives: 2 3 as freightlocomotives, and as switching locomotives.
