A Walgreens drug store in suburban Chicago. Walgreens maintains in excess of 9,000 store locations in the United States and is the second largest pharmacy chain in the United States. In 2014 Walgreens purchased and merged with Alliance Boots and formed a holding company, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. The divisions formed following the merger left Walgreens with all domestic operations in the United States and Alliance Boots forming all international sales. Walgreens originated in Chicago and was based in that city which continues to be the base for Walgreens Boots Alliance.
