The EleventhIndiana battery shelledAtlanta in the good view of the citycould be had from theposition of the Eleventh,and its firing was verydestructive to that portion of the city in the neighbor-hood of the round house. On that day the siege of Atlanta began. Theenemy was strongly intrenched. A direct assault on hisworks would have been madness. On the afternoon ofthe 24th we were informed that at a signal at 9 oclockthat night the pickets were to lire, ihe artillery was toopen up along the whole line, bugles were to be blown,and the army in the trenches were to shout as if starting.
