Dey left the Rock Island, of whichhe was a division engineer, stationed at Tiskilwa, and com-menced at Davenport, Iowa, the first survey of a railroad lineacross the State of Iowa. I had been with Mr. Dey about eightmonths as rodman, and under his direction had made a sur-vey of the Peoria & Bureau Valley Railway in Illinois.
