. The mound builders : being an account of a remarkable people that once inhabited the valleys of the Ohio and Mississippi, together with an investigation into the archæology of Butler County, e, and exterior to it the circumference is divided byfifteen arcs, and from their intersections are notches, which divide the stone into fifteen sections. In thecenter occurs a mortise hole. It is said that this stonehas a slight resemblance to the famous Solstitial tabletfound in the city of Mexico. Berlin Tablet—This tablet was found June 14, 1876,by Dr. J. E. Sylvester and LinzeyCremeans, near Berlin,Jackson County, Ohio. It was found in a small moundsituated on the second bottom of a small tributary ofDixons Kun. The stone, which is six inches long, threeand five-eights wide, and half an inch thick, composedof a fine-grained sandstone of a grayish, brown color, occurred on a level with the original surface, placed onits edge with the ends pointing east and west. Bothsides are engraved, the style being of that kind knownas line-engraving. One side is a reduplication of theother. By the aid of the imagination several figures canbe traced, such as a human figure, a double-bladed oar,. Fig. 24.—Bbblin Tablet—Front View.
