A form of sun worship. The sun fading each winter was thought to suffer death which was typified by the death of Adonis while hunting on Lebanon. Every year during the autumn floods, Phoenician maidens mourned his loss on the bank of the River Adonis. After the painting by Margaret Dovaston, (1884 - 1954). From Hutchinson's History of the Nations, published 1915.
