Sunscreen microsphere, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Silicon microspheres, besides protecting against UV radiation, provides a thermoregulator effect thanks to the strong scattering properties of the microspheres in the infrared range of frequencies. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanoparticle form the main active components of sunscreens. Unlike the organic sun-blocking agents used in many sunscreens, these metal oxides do not degrade with exposure to sunlight. Magnification: x8000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
