Contractors assembling a timber-framed structure - a fast, economical and environmentally friendly method of building.
In Europe, the construction industry is responsible for around 50% of energy consumption. Modern building materials, such as metal, concrete and brick, require the expenditure of considerable energy resources to extract, process, manufacture and transport them to the construction site. Wood, by contrast, being a renewable resource, is far more environmentally friendly and has a particular value in addressing global warming issues. Timber produced in renewable forests works as a 'carbon sink' removing carbon from the atmosphere and considerably less energy is needed to produce wood products than its steel and concrete counterparts and to recycle it at the end of its useful life. Timber-framed (or modular) prefabricated structures save time and money compared with building from scratch because the components are produced in factories and quickly assembled on site. Modular structures are produced across a wide range of possibilities from small domestic housing to huge commercial structures that can be easily taken apart and modified to meet future requirements.
