Measles virus nucleocapsid, computer model. Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by the Morbillivirus sp. virus. Symptoms include fever, cough and a rash. The nucleocapsid is composed of a helical spiral of proteins that contain ribonucleic acid (RNA). This image was created using molecular modelling software and data from cryo-electron microscopy. Cryo-electron microscopy uses multiple angled beams of electrons to image specimens kept at minus 150 degrees Celsius. The resulting slices of data are reconstructed into 3-D models on computer.
